Wardriving:new phone who dis?

/ Wigle, Wardriving

Lack of funds doesn’t mean lack of fun!

On one of our Twitch streams we read an article from the EFF, Meet Rayhunter: A New Open Source Tool from EFF to Detect Cellular Spying. Immediately, actually before the stream started Kevin (macros) got wind of this and ordered the supplies. I’ll let him explain more about this.

During the stream it got us talking about wardriving. Wardriving, the act of literally driving (walking, running, cycling etc.) around looking for wifi signals that are broadcasting, is something anyone can do. You can read the Wiki article here. I thought to myself, “Sounds like fun. I want to try too!”

I thought first about getting a Raspberry Pi or Pico and learning some hardware handling techniques, but then I remembered that Kevin had told me there was an Android app. I could download instead. Perfect!

My household is strictly an iPhone household and we were trying to save money so I bounced some ideas off of Kevin on a Sunday stream. I kept putting antennas, Arduinos, OrangePis, Raspberry Picos into my shopping cart with all the supplies and I couldn’t really guarantee or justify spending around $70-$120 on something I could just potentially download on to an Android phone. Here comes the solution. A burner phone.

Went to Walmart, got the Moto G Play for $32 with tax and viola! I can now download Wigle the wifi wardriving app, for free. I ended up activating and making it a working real phone for $39 with tax, but I didn’t need to if I just wanted to use Wigle. I am looking to explore more apps unavailable on iOS and will post more soon. Let us know via BlueSky, Twitch, or TikTok if you have any more ideas on what to download on my new Android phone!
